Male Cosmetic Surgery

Treatment Options

Many plastic surgery procedures can be performed on men as well as women. Here are some of the most common male plastic surgery options that Dr. McNichols offers:

Liposuction for Men

Male liposuction can remove stubborn pockets of fat that do not respond to diet and exercise. For men, popular treatment areas include the abdomen, flanks (“love handles”), chest, and back. For the procedure, small incisions are made in discreet locations, and a thin tube (cannula) is used to gently suction out excess fat. In so doing, liposuction can refine and contour the body while preserving a natural, masculine shape.

Tummy Tuck for Men (Abdominoplasty)

A male tummy tuck addresses loose or excess abdominal skin and weakened abdominal muscles, commonly caused by significant weight loss or aging. During the procedure, excess skin and fat are removed from the abdomen, and the underlying muscles are tightened to create a flatter, firmer midsection. This procedure often helps men look younger, fitter, and more athletic, especially for men who are burdened by excess skin and persistent fat after having lost a large amount of weight.

Facelift for Men

A facelift for men is designed to reduce visible signs of aging in the lower face and neck while preserving a natural, masculine look. Incisions are typically placed around the ears and within the hairline, through which the surgeon tightens the underlying tissues, repositions facial structures, and removes excess skin. The result is a smoother jawline, reduced jowls, and a firmer neck.

Male plastic surgery is highly individualized. During your consultation, Dr. McNichols will discuss your concerns, examine your anatomy, and recommend a surgical plan that may include one or multiple procedures for more comprehensive results.

Candidates

You may be a candidate for male plastic surgery if:

  • You have stubborn fat deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise
  • You have loose or excess skin on your abdomen, face, or neck
  • You are bothered by signs of aging, such as jowls, deep facial creases, or a sagging neck
  • You are in good overall health and have realistic expectations for the outcome
  • You are a non-smoker (or are willing to quit prior to surgery)

Ideal candidates should also be at or near a stable weight, as significant weight fluctuations can affect the results of body contouring procedures.

Recovery

Recovery from cosmetic surgery varies depending on the specific procedures performed. In general, here is what you can expect:

After surgery, you will be monitored in a recovery area before being discharged home. You will need someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first 24 to 48 hours. Depending on the procedure, dressings or compression garments may be applied to help minimize swelling and support the treated areas.

Most of this week will be resting and healing. Swelling, bruising, and discomfort are common; these symptoms can be managed with prescribed medications. You will be advised to avoid strenuous activity and follow specific instructions regarding incision care, sleeping position, and use of compression garments.

Many patients can return to light activities and non-strenuous work within 1 to 2 weeks, depending on the procedure(s) performed and the nature of their job. More demanding physical activity, such as heavy lifting or vigorous exercise, should typically be avoided for at least 4 to 6 weeks or until cleared by Dr. McNichols.

After the initial 7 to 10 days of downtime, most patients are ready to resume general activities (except strenuous exercise). Bruising, soreness, and swelling generally improve over the first several weeks, but full recovery can take weeks to months as the body adjusts, tissues settle, and incisions mature. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled so that Dr. McNichols can monitor your healing and address any questions or concerns.
